Daring Cooks September 2011|Stock, Soup & Consommé!

Participating without really participating!  But first…

Peta, of the blog Peta Eats, was our lovely hostess for the Daring Cook’s September 2011 challenge, “Stock to Soup to Consommé”. We were taught the meaning between the three dishes, how to make a crystal clear Consommé if we so chose to do so, and encouraged to share our own delicious soup recipes!

Ahhhh, soup. We love it.  French Onion Soup in particular.  But honestly, it’s too still hot in Los Angeles to contemplate making soup or even stock, so I was going to forgo this challenge until… I actually read the darn thing.  And one of the parts of the challenge was to make stock into consommé, which is a very clarified soup base (or sometimes eaten by itself).  As I contemplated perhaps getting it together and making a quick chicken stock from some bones we have the freezer, I spied this:

Two quarts of frozen chicken stock!  Well, that ruled out this challenge, because we already have more stock than we know what to do with!  And then, I watched this!

And realized that I could participate just by whacking up the blocks of stock and letting them melt through some cheese cloth in the fridge!  Ok, participate isn’t exactly what I did when compared with these beautiful, bold and daring cooks, but we should have some consummé at the end of it all.  Or at least, I hope we will.  Because after 11 hours of melting, all I’ve got to show so far is this:

Less than an inch of liquid.  My husband comes home tonight and I’m not so sure how thrilled he’s going to be at my rearranging our tiny fridge to accommodate another one of my cooking projects.  Maybe if I bribe him with some soup?

Thanks Peta for a fantastic and educational challenge.  I will definitely be using this clarification method on my stocks – once we get a bigger fridge!

Cheers.

The instructions for making these are very long, so instead of posting them in their entirety, here is a link to a pdf of them.  It is jam-packed full of info and well worth reading if you are interested in making any of these things!

Well, it was a good effort there! I didn’t try the consomme at all, so you have a step up there! I can’t imagine wanting soup in the heat of LA, so I think your solution was just right… assuming it melted all the way!

Genius! I hope it works out!!

Oh my goodness I am blushing! Thank you for my kind words about my consomme, how is/did the straining going/go?

ROTFL, well, you can’t say you didn’t try!
