Friday Tip|Set It Up!

This is one of those posts where I man up and admit to being wrong.  Maybe not “W” wrong (my ego is too fragile for that), but mistaken in an assertion at the very least…

Above is a photo of all the ingredients for a pizza my husband is about to make*.  He likes to take everything out and have it ready to go (even measured out if possible) before he starts cooking.  Me, not so much…

I like to do what I have come to think of as “fast tracking,” which is a project management term for performing tasks simultaneously.  It feels like I’m saving time, which I might be, but even I will admit that the amount is negligible.

And, having all the ingredients out before you get going doesn’t mean that you can’t do more than one thing at a time when you’re actually cooking.  What it will save you from – and what it would have saved me from the other night when I about melted down from neglecting to make the dipping sauce for our sweet potato fries** – is forgetting stuff.  My husband very rarely smacks his forehead and utters “(expletive)!  I forgot the (forgotten thing)!” while cooking.***

Will I take this advice and start putting out all the ingredients before I get started?  Probably not.  But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t, if you’re so inclined.  If you have the space, I’d highly recommend it.  This trick will especially help new cooks making their way around complicated recipes.  It’s quite a relief when, suddenly realizing you need the cumin “now!”, you have it right there at your fingertips.

Hope that’s helpful!

Cheers.

*Which was incredibly delicious.  My husband makes very good pizza.
**To his credit, my husband kept insisting that the fries were delicious on their own.  And that the steak (which was well cooked, but definitely underwhelming) was very nice.  But he’s just a good guy like that.
***He rarely does this while doing anything.  He is a very organized person.  I have learned much from him on that score.
